Flute Maintenance!
Monday, November 4, 2019 by Jamie Rone | Maintenance
Hey Y’all!
Middle school region round 1 & 2 are over, high school marching band is winding down... high school region is about to begin. It is about the time to start thinking about getting your flute maintained.
Think about a few things:
1) How long have you owned your flute? - If you are in middle school and have never had your flute Cleaned, Oiled & Adjusted (COA), then you should do this at least once a year. The big thing to really remember is that if you are renting is to take it back to your rental store and have them do the maintenance, it should be covered (or some of it) in the rental agreement.
2) Are you using your flute as your marching flute? - If you are, then you need to get your flute looked at every 6 months. Once directly after marching band season is over so you can have a great working flute for your concert season and once at the end of the school year. Why the end of the school year? Well, if you wait until right before school starts to get your flute fixed then you run the risk of doing the same thing that all the other students who procrastinated did as well. Then you will be waiting for your flute for 2 or more weeks. Get it done sooner rather than later and then you don’t have to think about it when school starts. The repair technicians will thank you, so will your parents and private lesson teacher.
3) Do you have an Intermediate Flute and a Marching flute? - If this is the case get your marching flute looked at right after marching season and use it as a back up when your Intermediate flute is in the shop. Make sure your Intermediate flute is taken to a technician where you bought your flute if it is under warranty. If it is no longer under warranty or you do not want to ship your flute out of state due to the shipping fees, locate someone in your area who has a very good background in repair. Usually you can ask your flute teacher who they take their flute to if they take it to someone in the area.
There are a lot of little things that happen to your flute that your private lesson teacher can help you with. It is sometimes your best option to wait until you see your flute teacher before getting any fixes on your flute. They can give you specific details on the issues to discuss with the technicians when you go to the repair shop.
Do not go unprepared... if you just say, “My flute is broken, if won‘t play.”
They repair technician will potentially just fix something that may or may not have been the issue.
Also, your finger pressure is important. If the flute comes back and it still doesn’t play well but the technician says it is fixed, it may be because they press harder than you.
Keep these things in mind as you keep your flute maintained.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions about flute repair!

REGION RECORDINGS!!
Hey LHS Flutes!
I have taken far to long to post these, but I hope you do not rely too much on the recordings to learn these. It is much better to wait to learn these with me. I will start teaching the week of the 20th so plan on seeing me during your band classes that week and we can really get on top of these.
Rachel Lopez is a fantastic model for these etudes, take note of her style and see you all soon!
